Eco-Friendly Flooring Option
Cork flooring is made from the bark of cork oak trees which are mostly found in Mediterranean regions. The top ½ inch or so of the bark is carefully harvested from the living cork trees without causing any harm to the tree itself. Once they are harvested, cork trees can take in up to five times more carbon which allows them to regenerate the bark within 8 to 12 years.
Cork floors, along with bamboo floors, are the only hardwood flooring types that do not require the tree to be killed.

Cork Flooring Types
Floating Cork Floors:
Floating cork floors are composed of floor panels that are assembled together without the need for special tools or adhesives. These floors do not require a separate underlayment either because the panels are composed of three layers; a top layer of veneered cork, a middle layer of high density fiberboard, and a bottom layer of agglomerated cork. The panels for floating cork floors are available in panel, strip, or square styles which vary in size and provide different looks.
Floating cork floors are the most common type of cork flooring installed and they are an ideal option for raised access panel flooring, radiant floor applications, and soundproof flooring in condos or apartments
Cork Tile Floors:
Cork tile floors are made up of solid cork tiles that are about ¼ inch thick and they are installed over a subfloor and held in place with glue or an adhesive. An oil or wax finish was typically applied to cork tile floors and the tile cuts can create mosaics, borders, or other designs in the floor. Most finishes used now are UV-cured with very low VOC emissions. For the most part, floating cork floors have taken over the cork flooring market due to the easier installation process.

Colors & Designs
Cork flooring can be stained in the surface layer to create a wide range of colors, patterns, and designs to suit any application. There are many styles of natural cork available that tend to work well in any home but staining allows homeowners to create entirely unique looks to really enhance a room. It is important to keep in mind that if a stained cork floor is scratched or gouged, the natural color of the cork will be revealed and contrast with the stained surface. Natural cork colors are the more popular choice because they match the décor of most homes and they hide dirt and seams.
Cork Flooring Maintenance
Of the many flooring options available, cork flooring is one of the more durable options and it can last for up to 75 years with the proper maintenance. These floors are pretty easy to maintain as they are naturally moisture resistant and applying a polyurethane finish helps protect the floor even better against moisture and abrasions. The moisture resistance also makes cork floors resistant to mold.
The only required maintenance for cork floors is regular dusting, sweeping, and damp mopping. Harsh cleaning chemicals and excessive water should be avoided because they could cause damage to the floor. If the cork floor starts to fade or wear down, a new coat of polyurethane finish can help solve the problem.
Benefits of Cork Flooring
The durability and design versatility of cork floors makes them an excellent flooring option for any area of the home including kitchens, bathrooms, living rooms, dining rooms, and even bedrooms. Cork has several natural properties including fire and moisture resistance that make them beneficial for your home.
The following are several more benefits of cork flooring:
- The air-filled cells absorb sound and impact which makes the floor resilient, comfortable, and an excellent sound insulator.
- Cork is a 100% renewable resource collected from live cork oak trees.
- Natural thermal properties help hold in warmth.
